Description: The Middle School Ancient Civilizations course is the first of two history courses specifically designed for late elementary and middle school students. Studying ancient civilizations is one of the most fascinating areas of all human history! The Story of the World Series will be the main text for the two courses, with this course completing Volume 1 and continuing up to the Black Plague (through chapter 24) in Volume 2. This course will provide a general introduction to several of the most prominent ancient civilizations from across the globe, introducing the student to the primary features of each, and examining the major influences and contributions to human history. Weekly readings, map work, class discussion, quizzes, 2-3 tests per semester, and at-home projects will be used to aid in the knowledge and appreciation of the ancient world. A focus on organization, the art of notetaking, and learning to verbally contribute in class are the academic intangibles that are intentionally developed with this course. Additionally, the historical fiction we have included will enhance the topics and strengthen the student’s reading and comprehension skills. Come join us as we explore human history – from the beginning!
