Description: Words! Words! Words! Come have fun with us as we begin exploring the basics of grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary and spelling! Students will choose their own literature to read (fiction, non-fiction, biographies, etc.), according to their reading level, and they will have opportunities to share mini book reports (verbal or written) with their classmates. In addition, we will read 3 books together as a class. We will slowly introduce the “ever-so-catchy” Shurley Grammar chants that are the foundation for understanding grammar. Students will also compile a “Journal of the Year”, marking major events and people involved in their lives, as a treasured keepsake for years to come. This class will be a fun and non-threatening introduction to the exciting world of words! Of note, the class has been designed and set up for 2nd graders. Thus, highly advanced 1st graders who can read and write at a 2nd grade level can register for this class. Last, this is a one-year curriculum and we will not rotate to a different curriculum next year.
