Description:  Our class will travel through splendid books that captivate readers with dynamic plots and inspiring protagonists. Students will acquire the basic tools needed to distinguish between a Biblical worldview and a secular worldview as presented in literature.  Extensive reading, various writing assignments, vocabulary quizzes, weekly journal responses and several projects will be assigned.  Each semester students will choose a biography to read and analyze, in addition to the required reading.  We also offer an Advanced Reading Program for students who want to tackle more than the books covered in class. We use a 3-year rotation of various books, which are never repeated, so students can enter as 6th graders and take this class until they are ready for High School Literature and Composition grades 9-10 (English I/II).

Description:  Through the use of exciting, well-written fiction and non-fiction, we will explore the theme of spreading God’s Word throughout the world. It is always my prayer that my students will grow in faith and understand better the adventure of being a Christian through reading and studying these stories. We will use guided reading questions, vocabulary, journal prompts, essays, and projects to help us dig deeper and understand better the works of literature we are reading.  We will also study the basics of grammar with the purpose of writing better phrases and clauses to ultimately write better sentences and paragraphs.  The book list above is in order of appearance with the first three books covered in the first semester and the last two covered in the second semester. We use a 3-year rotation of various books, so students can enter as 6th graders and take this class until they are ready for High School Literature and Composition grades 9-10 (English I/II).  All assignments and classwork for Middle School Literature and Composition with Mrs. Oster will be posted weekly on the class blog: hhlosterlit.blogspot.com. You can also reference this blog for a more in-depth look at the books we will be reading and how each one ties into our theme of missions for the year.
