Description: American Sign Language (ASL) is growing in popularity.  Students in this course will begin to understand and interpret exchanges in ASL through a variety of simple everyday situations, common to hearing and deaf.  They will learn how to examine the relevance of body language and facial expressiveness that individuals use to communicate in sign language. The main goal of this class is to provide ASL students with conversational confidence and competence. They will learn to sign the alphabet, how to count, and basic phrases, while building vocabulary and learning the structure of the language.  The benefits of learning sign language are numerous.  Students will have a greater appreciation, better awareness of and sensitivity to the deaf and hard of hearing community. ASL is one of the most widely used languages in the United States, and the fourth-most studied second language at American universities.  Join us on this unique journey as students learn how to communicate with a wide range of hearing, hard of hearing, and deaf individuals.
Supplies List: We will announce these later in the spring/early summer to give our families plenty of time to get the supplies.

Book: Juntos Dos, ISBN# 0130508489. Order through Amazon or other used book websites. Students will read a novel called Mi Propio Auto during the second semester.  This should be ordered through www.tprsbooks.com since the old version of the book has the same ISBN as the new version, and it is very important to have the correct version.  If you order it used, or buy it from a former student, be sure to get the version with the blue and white cover instead of the yellow cover since there are major differences between the 2 versions.  Use SKU: 0-929724-74-7
