Description: American Sign Language (ASL) is growing in popularity.  Students in this course will begin to understand and interpret exchanges in ASL through a variety of simple everyday situations, common to hearing and deaf.  They will learn how to examine the relevance of body language and facial expressiveness that individuals use to communicate in sign language. The main goal of this class is to provide ASL students with conversational confidence and competence. They will learn to sign the alphabet, how to count, and basic phrases, while building vocabulary and learning the structure of the language.  The benefits of learning sign language are numerous.  Students will have a greater appreciation, better awareness of and sensitivity to the deaf and hard of hearing community. ASL is one of the most widely used languages in the United States, and the fourth-most studied second language at American universities.  Join us on this unique journey as students learn how to communicate with a wide range of hearing, hard of hearing, and deaf individuals.  Students will receive daily written and online homework assignments to reinforce the concepts we are learning in class, with a test approximately every 4-5 weeks.
